Raymond Sinkovics Obituary

Raymond Allen Sinkovics, a resident of Goshen, IN, passed away peacefully at his residence on April 4, 2024. Ray was born in Mishawaka, IN, on September 7, 1941, to the late Alex and Rose (Kovach) Sinkovics.

He graduated from Mishawaka High School in 1960, where he actively participated in sports and showcased his talents as a thespian on the stage crew. Following his graduation, Ray was drafted into the U.S. Army, where he proudly served his country from 1963 to 1965. Upon his honorable discharge, he pursued higher education and earned an Associate Degree in Accounting from Indiana University. Ray embarked on a fulfilling career path, utilizing his business acumen to become a self-employed finishing painter. He was also a respected member of The National Wallpaper Guild, serving as a master wallpaper hanger for over 50 years. His craftsmanship left a lasting impact throughout St. Joseph County, with notable projects including the renovation of various schools in South Bend and the St. Joeseph County Public Library. He was also known for his role in the restoration of historic landmarks like the old Studebaker Administration Building and the Charles Arthur Carlisle home, helping to return those cherished buildings to their original grandeur. Beyond his professional endeavors, Ray was deeply involved in his community. He dedicated his time and leadership skills to the St. Monica School system, serving in various roles including Treasurer, President of the School Board, and Athletic Director. His passion for sports, particularly football, led him to play a pivotal role in the founding of Mishawaka Catholic Football, fostering unity among Mishawaka parochial schools at a time when dwindling numbers placed individual school programs in jeopardy. With what coach Ross Perri envisioned, Ray and other coaches and administrators got together and combined the programs into Mishawaka Catholic Football, which is still flourishing to this day. Additionally, he was periodically active in local politics, serving as campaign manager for his long-time friend and business associate Dan Koontz’s successful campaign for Mishawaka City Council in 1991-1992. Ray's unwavering support for Mishawaka Sports was unparalleled, evident in his nearly 50-year tenure as a season ticket holder. His spirit will forever persist over Tupper Field at Steele Stadium, where he cheered on his beloved teams. Additionally, Ray was an avid Indiana University Basketball fan, and was a fervent supporter on game nights, especially loud and boisterous when his Hoosiers were victorious.

Raymond Allen Sinkovics is survived by his brother, Dennis Sinkovics, sister, Peggy Hixenbaugh, children, Lynda Sutherland, Ryon (Michelle) Sinkovics, Damon Sinkovics, as well as six grandchildren, Jeremy, Katrina, Whitney, Mitchell, Ashleigh, and Tristain, and two great-grandchildren, Ewan and Cora, and his former wife Mellonie Gruda. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alex and Rose Sinkovics, and his daughter, Laurianne Stamm. Ray will be fondly remembered by all who knew him for his dedication, generosity, and infectious enthusiasm for life. He never knew a stranger and was known for striking up conversations wherever he went. His legacy of service and love for his community will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to have known him.
