Hildegard I. Van Huffel

Hildegard I. Van Huffel, 91, passed away Saturday, February 11, 2017 at Memorial Hospital of South Bend. Hildegard was born on May 7, 1925 in Germany, daughter of Karl and Katherine (Lang) Auer. Preceding her in death was her beloved husband, Joe Van Huffel, who died in May 2002, and daughter Christina in May 2000.
Hildegard and Joe were married on August 28, 1948 in Geislingen, Germany, where he was stationed with the US occupation forces and Hilde was employed as an interpreter. Hildegard and Joe loved to travel in the States and abroad. She worked at the University of Notre Dame and volunteered for the Chamber of Commerce and in retirement she loved to garden and read, and was a member of the Art League, Snite Art Museum, and Greenpeace.
Hildegard leaves behind her daughter, Karen J. Lee, son, Gary Van Huffel and wife, Tammy. She is also survived by six grandchildren, Michael Keres, Michelle Keres, Hana Van Huffel, Adriane McKinney, Crystal Fleming, and Mario Van Huffel. Surviving family in Germany includes sisters, Ilse (Gunar) Peterson, and Helga Mende.
