Anthony Schalliol Obituary

Anthony Earl Schalliol, affectionately known as Tony to his family and friends, passed away on April 28, 2025, at the age of 79, in South Bend, Indiana, surrounded by the love and warmth of his family.

Born on December 5, 1945, in Elkhart, Indiana, to the late Earl D. Schalliol and Margaret (De Geyter) Schalliol, Tony led a full and remarkable life defined by hard work, deep devotion to family, and an enduring zest for life.

Tony proudly served his country in the United States Army. He enlisted on March 11, 1969, and served honorably until March 2, 1971. His time in the military reflected the same dedication, strength, and sense of duty that would shape every aspect of his life thereafter.

Tony was a proud graduate of Purdue University and graduated with honors. Tony’s first job was actually as the owner-operator of Hummel Grain. Later, he began working as a long-haul, cross-country truck driver. His dedication to the trade was recognized through his membership in the Million Mile Plus Club, as a testament to his unwavering commitment and exemplary record in the trucking industry.

On April 1, 1967, Tony married the love of his life, Shirley A. (Hummel) Schalliol. Together, they built a life rooted in love, laughter, and cherished memories. Their union was blessed with three children: Kimberly Schalliol (Angel Sanchez Rodriguez), Matthew (Tatiana) Schalliol, and Margaret (Tyson) Nieter.

Tony found immense joy in his role as a grandfather to Antonia Boger-May, Joshua Boger, Isabelle Rodriguez-Schalliol, Abigail Rodriguez-Schalliol, Hunter Schalliol, and Emma Schalliol, and as a great-grandfather to Jaxon Schalliol and Maya Schalliol. He is also survived by his sister, Susan (Tom) Leininger; his brother, Michael (Joyce) Schalliol; and his brother-in-law, Bernard. In addition to his parents, Tony was preceded in death by his sister, Helen Lemieux.

Tony was a man of wide-ranging interests and passions. An avid outdoorsman, he loved hunting and fishing and was a proud member of the National Rifle Association and the Coon Hunters Lodge. He also had a natural talent for building and construction, leading the Schalliol family construction crew with both vision and skill. Whether he was building house or repairing a car, Tony always had a project in the works and delighted in bringing his ideas to life.

A true jack of all trades, Tony embraced every challenge with enthusiasm. He especially enjoyed traveling to Florida, tackling hands-on projects, and sharing special casino outings with Shirley—his lifelong partner in adventure.

Tony’s legacy lives on in the family he loved, the work he was proud of, and the countless lives he touched with his generous heart, bright smile, and indomitable spirit. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
