Beatriz Barrios Obituary

Beatriz Barrios was born on April 28, 1958, in Managua, Nicaragua, to Julio Alberto Escobar Padilla and Maura Esmeralda Escobar Baca. She was the third of six children. On her 29th birthday, September 10, 1987, she married the love of her life, Joaquin Barrios, who proceeded her in death.

Together they had two surviving children, Jennifer Barrios and Joseph Barrios. She also leaves behind her granddaughter, Chloe Wilson; her brother, Julio Cesar Escobar Alvarez; her sisters, Lillian De Fatima Escobar Alvarez, Emperatriz De Los Angeles Escobar Alvarez, Maria Lourdes Escobar Alvarez; nieces, Karla Escobar, Natalie Joya, Erica Escobar; nephews, Alexandar Escobar, Christopher Jose Saenz, Ed Joya; to her best friend who is more like a sister, Edgena Bates and her daughter, Kim Asnbeck.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Maura Esmeralda Alvarez Baca and Julio Alberto Escobar Padilla, as well as her youngest brother, Marvin De Jesus Escobar Alvarez, and her granddaughter, Zoey Barrios Wilson.

Beatriz worked for many years as a self-employed housekeeper and transitioned to hotels and then to Notre Dame University.  She always brought her dictionary to work, school, and doctor's visits when she knew no English. Beatriz was not fluent in English and always tried her best to communicate with others. She was so heartwarming and likable to many people she has worked with and met.

Beatriz fled Nicaragua that was ruled by the leftist Sandinistas when she was in her early teens. Her father made the decision that she had to flee. She was scared to leave but had no choice. The Sandinistas had taken her from school to serve in the military. Beatriz, allowed a single phone call, called her father who arranged her escape. She was on guard duty at the gate in the middle of the night. Her father had instructed her to look for his Jeep flashing its headlights and run to it. He drove her over the border to Guatemala and left her with a map showing the way to the U.S. Beatriz worked in different countries until she reached Mexico, where she met an old woman on the bench who advised her that she will successfully cross the US border without getting detained, which she did. Before she crossed the border, she turned to look for the old lady, but she disappeared. She believes that the old lady was an angel that was guiding her throughout this journey. Beatriz left behind her home and her family in the hopes of building a better life in America. She did this with courage and an unwavering faith in God.

She was very religious and followed her Catholic faith. Beatriz read the Bible to her children every night in Spanish. She gave the light of happiness to her family and friends. Beatriz was the backbone of the family because she always brought the family together. She guides her children on the right path to achieve success in life.

Our precious mother, wife, and grandmother left us on March 19, 2023. She is now out of our sight, but never out of her memory, and into the arms of our loving and Heavenly Father. Beatriz will be remembered for her laughter, genuine care and affection toward the people she loved, and her likable personality.

A private family service has taken place and Beatriz has been laid to rest in St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park in Granger, IN. Hahn Funeral Home has been entrusted with handling the arrangements.
