Carl J Doherty

Carl J. Doherty, 98, passed away on October 30, 2023.  Carl was born on September 28, 1925, in Centerville, IN to the late Charles and Mabel Doherty.  He married Camillia Plaga in 1949 in DeMotte, Indiana. 

His life interests concerned family and music.  He began cornet lessons at the age of 9 and played TAPS at the ages 12-13 for military funerals and memorial services.  In his early teen years, he did farm work with horses and cows and baling hay.  He worked in the local bank from age 18-21 as a teller. 

After graduation from Indiana and Indiana State University he taught music and band for 42 years in public, catholic and private schools. He studied music education and string music at Ball State University.  During summer vacations from school he worked in factories, chemical lab and steel mills.  Later he worked as a bank teller for 10 years at TCU. 

Instrumental activities included concerts, marching, dance bands and small ensembles.  He taught vocal music in grades K-12, sang solos in 2 operas, radio programs and served as director of two church choirs.  As a member of the State Lions Band, he did parades in Toronto, Chicago and Miami Beach.  The whole family went to parades in New York City and Dallas, TX.  Recently he played trombone and baritone in the Michiana Concert B and the Marshall County Church Orchestra in Plymouth, IN.

Building and flying model airplanes was an interesting hobby followed by a few pilot training lessons.  One of his big interests was passing along the pleasure of music that he had learned from his teacher, Everett Chapman and his school principal and mentor, Lee Outland.

He is survived by his wife, Camillia; 3 children, Dennis Cheryl and Carlene (John) Cergnul; 3 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren and his beloved dog, Minnie. 

The family would like to thank the staff at Healthwin for the care during Carl’s last days. 

The family will receive friends from 12 pm-2 pm on Saturday, November 4, 2023, at South Side Church of God, 7351 IN 931 South Bend, IN 46614 with service to begin at 2 pm in the church.
