Carol Vogel Obituary

Carol Ann Vogel (Brunt), 74, of Granger, died on Sunday, January 21, 2024, following a long struggle with frontotemporal dementia.

Carol had wished against having an obituary but lived a life worth noting. Carol was born to Albert and Shirley (Pearson) Brunt in South Bend, Indiana, on January 11, 1950. Carol attended Holy Cross Grade School and Saint Joseph High School. While attending high school, she worked as a "Corby Girl" at Corby Hall, Notre Dame, to help fund tuition.

Carol attended Southwestern Michigan College after completing high school, where she met Gregory Vogel, her former husband and father of her children. Carol never liked being a housewife and always wanted to do something more. After her divorce and while raising three small children, Carol obtained her B.S. in Business from Indiana University, South Bend, in 1982. At 40, she decided to pursue further career growth and moved to Bloomington, Indiana, where she attended the Indiana University School of Law. In 1994, Carol graduated with her J.D., an accomplishment she was incredibly proud of.

Carol spent most of her legal career as an insurance defense attorney, eventually retiring as a partner at Hunt Suedhoff Kalamaros in South Bend. After her retirement, she decided to use her skills to help others and joined the Peace Corps in 2008 at age 58. She was stationed in Jamaica, where she helped establish the Rock the Babies program at the May Pen Hospital. After her time in the Peace Corps, Carol returned to South Bend and continued volunteering at the Food Bank of Northern Indiana and the Center for Hospice Care.

Throughout her life, Carol was devoted to the well-being of others. Whether protesting for women’s rights or helping stock the shelves at the food bank, she was driven to provide helping hands. Carol had a deep love for humanity, evident in all her actions. In her leisure time, she enjoyed playing golf, caring for her lawn and home, and cheering on the Lady Irish with her friends and fellow fans.

She is survived by her sons Joshua (Jana), Jacob (Billie) James-Vogel, and Jesse (Nicholas) Vogel-Kerr; grandchildren Grant, Caleb, Arianna, and Riley; siblings Tom (Marsha), Randy (Cindy), Tim (Linda), Beth, Nancy (Ted), Sue (Kenneth), and numerous nieces, and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents and brother, Christopher Brunt, and her favorite “Padre,” Rev. James J. McGrath, C.S.C.

Per Carol's wishes, she was cremated. A Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, January 29, at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Cross Church,1050 Wilber St, South Bend, IN 46628.
