Christopher S. Durham

Christopher S. Durham of South Bend, Indiana died August 19, 2023, leaving behind a loving family and many friends. He was born February 26, 1979. Because he loved so many persons, and because so many loved him, a complete list of names would run too long for these pages. We mention, notwithstanding, his fellow brothers with whom he lived; the many good people working within Mosaic, Logan Industries, and Logan Center; and also, the McCaffery family, who loved him as their own: in particular, Cheryl and Patrick McCaffery (Chris’s guardians) and their children. Chris, every bit a son and brother of this family, will be sorely missed and dearly remembered by them.

A few words for Chris’s memory. He was zealous for life, hardworking, playful, independent, gentle, and loving. Chris was a man for all people; he had friends and coconspirators all over town. His sweetness and good nature won him a great and loyal company. He loved equally and sincerely. He lived life enthusiastically; he loved everything, simple things, all good things, enthusiastically. In this, and in his general good humor, — both his joy and his zeal for life, — he should be remembered and honored, but better yet, imitated. Too often do worries cloud our vision: the one needful thing is a holy zest for good life and good living. Chris was a model to be followed in this way, especially.

Chris burned with an eagerness for life: at the end of his earthly journey, though his body faltered, his soul showed immortal yearnings. In this way, he went through Life’s Door and on toward more life with God. Having received the holy sacraments of the Catholic Church and having been sealed with the promise of salvation, he is now embraced by the Mercy of God and Heaven’s saints.

The family would like to extend its wholehearted gratitude to the Mosaic family, especially its loving staff, as well as all those who work on behalf of those with special needs. We are truly grateful for their heroic and compassionate service. In addition, our sincerest thanks must go to Heart to Heart Hospice Care, for their gentle and merciful service to Chris these last few months. Visitation occurs, before Holy Mass, at Hahn Funeral Home, Tuesday, August 29th at 10am, across the street from the church. The Memorial Mass will occur at St. Bavo Catholic Church, Mishawaka, at 11am.
