Obituary

SOUTH BEND - David J. Schroeder, 82, passed away surrounded by his loving daughters and his dedicated caregivers from Storypoint and Heart to Heart Hospice on Friday, May 27, 2022.

Dave was born on October 1, 1939, in Ft. Wayne, to Marian Schroeder. He enjoyed close relationships with his grandmother, LaVange Schroeder, and his aunt, Shirley (Schroeder) Albert, and his younger brother Harvey Albert. On July 12, 1957, he married Carol Craft in Plymouth, Indiana and they spent the next 58 years together, raising two daughters, Julie (Schroeder) Weidner and Jan (Schroeder) Salazar, loving their many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and running successful businesses in both Florida and Indiana.

Dave and Carol owned and operated Plymouth Motor Speedway in the late 1960s before moving to warmer weather in Florida where they owned David J’s restaurant and fell in love with the restaurant industry. Dave and Carol eventually left Florida to return home to Indiana to be closer to their grandchildren, and opened up Lincolnway Café, which they successfully ran for 17 years before heading into retirement. As anyone who knew Dave can attest, sitting still and relaxing were two things he didn’t do well. After a short-lived retirement of a year, Dave and Carol started another restaurant, Portage Café, where many of their old friends and patrons from Lincolnway were reunited. Their restaurants were always places of warmth, delicious food, and a lot of laughter. Dave’s unique and recognizable laugh will be one of the things most missed but forever remembered as pure joy.

Dave will be fondly remembered by his family and friends as a man of love, stories, and fun. Papa, as he was known to his grandchildren, was made for grandparent life. From weekly ice cream dates, showing everyone the “tricks” to Euchre including “sharpening the knife”, to a relentless love of the White Sox despite being in a Cubs family, Papa was the embodiment of what a grandparent should be. How lucky we’ve all been to have had such a long, wonderful life with him.

Dave was a connector. If he entered a room as a stranger, he left that same room knowing the name of every single person, often establishing a years-long friendship on the spot. He was incredibly proud of the community of friends he and Carol created through their businesses and carried those friendships with him until the time of his death. Dave will be deeply and forever be missed by all of those who loved him.

Dave is survived by his children, Julie (Daniel) Weidner of Plymouth, Indiana, Jan Salazar of Plymouth, Indiana; his grandchildren, Erin (Chad) McDonald of Plymouth, Derek (Amanda) Salazar of Northfield, Minnesota, Britni (Varun) Sehgal, Chicago, Illinois, Jared (Crysta) Weidner of Plymouth; great-grandchildren Elaina, Claire and Marisa McDonald; Gabriella and Madeline Weidner, Plymouth; and Nash Sehgal, Chicago; his brother, Harvey (Suzanne) Albert, FL; and many nieces and nephews. Dave was preceded in death by his loving mother, Marian, his stepfather, Charles (Buss) Cannan, and his wife, Carol.

Visitation will be on Tuesday, May 31 from 4-7 p.m. with the service at 7 p.m. in Hahn Funeral Home, 505 W. 8th Street, Mishawaka. Burial will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery, Plymouth Wednesday morning at 11 a.m.
