David Whitfield Obituary

David L. Whitfield, age 57, of Mishawaka, passed away suddenly on December 19th, 2024, in his home.  Born September 15th, 1967, to Leonard and Juliana C. (Brasini) Whitfield in Mishawaka, David graduated from St. Bavo Grade School and Marian High School before graduating from Butler University in 1990 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Finance.

David married the love of his life, Beth Burmeister, on December 8th, 1990, at St. Joseph Church in Mishawaka.   David is survived by his wife Beth and his six children Rachel (Matt) Knafel, Michael, Jacob (Alicia), Abigail, Zachary, and Demetrius Jackson.  Also surviving are his sisters Janet (Tim) Hyduk and Joann (Jim) Welsh, mother and father-in-law Tom and Judy Burmeister, in-laws Mike (Cathy) Burmeister and Jennifer (John) Rittenhouse, grandchildren Caroline, Tommy and John Knafel and Carter Whitfield, and eight nieces and nephews.

David loved athletics.  He starred at Marian in both football and basketball.  He went on to play football at Butler and cherished his experience on the gridiron.  After his playing days were over, he started coaching at St. Joseph Grade School, (Mishawaka), Mishawaka Catholic, and Marian High School.  He loved being an assistant coach in both football and basketball.  He loved to watch all his kids play sports.  Even after his children were done, you could frequently find him at Marian football and basketball games.  And he loved watching his Fighting Irish.

David was a financial advisor with Osaic Institutions, Inc.  He cared deeply for his clients and was a trusted advisor to them.  David was always helping people.  He was a fervent supporter of Mishawaka Catholic School and Marian High School and would do anything to help the schools.  He was an active member at St. Joseph (Mishawaka) Parish and loved Notre Dame and entertaining friends and family at the ND tailgate parties.

The definition of David’s life was love.  David loved many things and many people.  He never met a stranger; to know him was to feel like family.  For the many who had the pleasure of being part of his life, you felt and were touched by his kindness, selflessness, and generosity.  Whether at a Notre Dame tailgate blaring Van Halen, a Whitfield family gathering, a Mishawaka Catholic or Marian event, or just about town in Mishawaka, David opened his arms and his life to being with the ones he loved.  He is going to be deeply missed by friends and family, but we celebrate a life well-lived, and a man fondly remembered.

A visitation will be held on Sunday December 22, from 3:00PM – 6:00PM in the Marian High School gymnasium at 1311 S. Logan St, Mishawaka.  Please enter door 6 near the football field.  A rosary will be said at 3:00PM.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, December 23, 2024, at 2:30PM at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mishawaka, 220 W 4th Street, Mishawaka. A private family burial will take place at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Mishawaka Catholic School, Marian High School Athletics, or St. Joseph Catholic Church of Mishawaka.
