Della Quinn Obituary

South Bend, IN-Della M. Quinn, 94, passed away on Sunday, December 27, 2020.  On October 22, 1926, in Logansport, IN, Della was born to the late Dennis and Dorothy (Toney) Chambers.  She was the eldest of 6 children.  Della had 4 brothers, Tom, Ves, Eddy and Jack and one sister, Margaret Lou.  At 10 years of age Della and her brothers, Tom, Ves and Jack went to live with their grandparents, V.P. and Malinda Chambers.  Della later lived with her aunt, Katherine Schrader.

Della graduated from Logansport High School in 1944.  She also attended the Cadet Nursing program at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Lafayette, IN.  When WWII ended, her high school sweetheart, Robert J. Quinn deployed with the 168th Combat Engineers Company C returned after being liberated from a POW camp.  Della married the love of her life on September 6, 1945, in Logansport, IN.  Della and Bob moved to South Bend, IN after their wedding and raised their family in the area.  Della worked at Teeters GMC and McCarthey GMC alongside her husband for many years until it closed.  She then went to work at the IUSB bookstore until her retirement in 1993.  Della sold Avon for many years, well past retirement age.  She was always a high performing seller and in the Avon Presidents Club yearly.  Della always enjoyed getting out and meeting others and helping in her community.  After her retirement she spent many years as a volunteer at The Center for the Homeless.  She was also a Block Captain representing her neighborhood with the South Bend Police Department.  Della will always be remembered for being very strong-willed and very independent, living by herself until the very end.

Della is survived by her 3 children, Linda (Rick) Myers of Wilmington, DE, Robert (Rita) Quinn of South Bend and Gary (Helen) Quinn of Granger; 7 grandchildren, Lisa (Fred) Welch, Chrissy (Jason) Robbins, Jennifer Myers, Greg (Lenka) Myers, Scott Quinn, Anna Quinn and Missy Etherington; 9 great-grandchildren, Cassidy, Nick and Jack Welch, Lexie and Kylie Robbins, Brianna and Ryan Myers, Konner and Karson Quinn; brother, Ves (Lindus) Chambers.

Della is preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Robert J. Quinn; stillborn daughter, Christina; brothers, Tom Chambers, Eddie Chambers, Jack Chambers; sister, Margaret Lou Kreighbaum; and her constant companion after her husband’s death, Sheba the German Shepherd.

Visitation will be held at 12:00 pm-1:00 pm, Wednesday, December 30, 2020, in Hahn Funeral Home, 505 W. 8th Street Mishawaka with service following at 1:00 pm.  Della will be laid to rest in Highland Cemetery. 

Due to current public health and safety standards for COVID-19, social distancing will be enforced and masks required.
