Donald E. Wood, 93, born on August 17, 1930, in Mishawaka, Indiana, to the late Harold Wood and late Viola (Byam) Wood Baker. Donald was raised in Mishawaka by Viola and the late Donald Baker. Donald passed away peacefully at home on June 7, 2024.
A life-long resident of Mishawaka, Donald was deeply rooted in the community he loved and where he also found the love of his life, the late Helen (Coryn) Wood. They were united in marriage on May 1, 1954, at St. Bavo's Catholic Church, a union that was blessed with over six decades of shared memories and love.
Donald's life was marked by his unwavering dedication to his family and his country. He was a devoted husband to Helen and a loving father to his sons, Kenneth B. (Pennie) Wood of Mishawaka, IN, Andrew M. (Bridget) Wood of Parker, CO and Christopher J. (Justine) Wood of Mishawaka, IN. Donald was filled with pride and joy by his role as Grandfather to Jacob, Jasmine, Alex, Zachary, Nathan, and Griffin.
Donald was preceded in death by his son Thomas and his sisters Aileen Cunningham and Jo Carothers, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, strength, and family devotion.
Donald served his country with honor and distinction as a Corporal of the United States Army. His time in the Army was a testament to his patriotism and bravery where he exemplified the values of duty, loyalty, and sacrifice. He proudly defended his country's ideals and freedoms, leaving a legacy of service. Before he retired in 1998, Donald spent 38 years working for Indiana Bell as a Switching Equipment Technician.
His commitment to service was evident through his participation in the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP), and the BK Club.
As we bid farewell to Donald E. Wood, we celebrate a life lived with purpose and love. His memory will continue to inspire and guide us and remain in our hearts forever. Donald's journey on earth has ended, but his story will be told for generations to come as an example of a life well-lived and a man well-loved.
A Memorial Service will be held on July 12th, 2024. Friends may visit with the Family from 10am to 12pm in Hahn Funeral Home, 505 W. 8th Street, Mishawaka. A graveside service with military honors will immediately follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Osceola, IN.
