Beloved father, dentist, patriot, and avid sports fan, Walter Jennings Barkes, Jr., age 98, of Mishawaka, Indiana, passed away peacefully on November 29, 2024.
Born on May 9, 1926, in Mishawaka, Walter was the son of Walter Sr. and Hyacinthe (Turner) Barkes. A proud Hoosier, Walter’s life was defined by his deep love for family, service, and community. He graduated from Mishawaka High School in 1944, before answering the call to serve his country in World War II. Walter served in the Eastern Theater, where he was stationed in the Pacific during the final years of the war. His service was a testament to his courage and commitment to duty, values he learned as an Eagle Scout & values that he carried with him throughout his life.
Following the war, Walter graduated from the University of Indiana School of Dentistry in 1950, and joined his father's Mishawaka practice, along with his brother, Robert, where he served the local community with dedication and care for 52 years. Known for his gentle manner, Walter touched the lives of generations of families, earning the respect and affection of his patients and colleagues alike.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Walter was an avid fan of sports, particularly the Chicago Cubs, IU sports, and Mishawaka athletics. He could always be found rooting for his teams through thick and thin.
In retirement, he spent a lot of time working in the yard, talking sports with the neighbors, and bowling into his nineties.
Walter was an active member of the Mishawaka Lions Clubs for decades and served as Club President in the late 80's. He enjoyed volunteering his time, believing strongly in giving back to the community that had supported him for so many years.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Janet (Grove); daughter, Sheila Barkes; and son, Brian (Kristin) Barkes. He was a cherished brother to Robert (Doreen) Barkes and is preceded in his journey by his sister Virginia (Wayne) Kincaid.
