Elexis Emily Ellis

On July 1, 2023, our beautiful Elexis Emily Ellis, 31, passed away in her sleep.  Elexis was born in South Bend, Indiana, at Memorial Hospital on August 21, 1991.  During her childhood, she lived in Denver, CO; Atlanta, GA; Minneapolis, MN; Miami, FL; and returned to South Bend to finish her last two years of high school. She graduated from St. Joe High School in 2009, the University of Notre Dame in 2013 and recently completed her dissertation for her PhD in Sociology from Yale University.  While working on her PhD, Elexis taught numerous classes where she was beloved by her students.

She truly was an everything girl!  She was creative, compassionate, generous, musical, athletic and adventurous.  Her missionary spirit led her to serve in Guatemala, Vietnam, and multiple times in Monterrey, Mexico.  She also traveled throughout Europe and South Africa during two studies abroad while at Notre Dame.  The last ten years of her life she split time living between New Haven, CT, and Manhattan, NY.

She is survived by her parents LaPhonso and Jennifer Ellis; brothers P.J., Walter and Zo; grandmother, Dorothy Ellis; uncles Kevin Todd and Leroy Davis Jr.; aunts, Debby deWolfe and Tracy Hartman; sister-in-law, Danielle Ellis; niece, Hattie; nephew, Zo Jr.; cousins Valerie deWolfe, Seth Calhoon, Kendell Davis, and Peyton Robin; godmother, Debra Pope; and countless other family and friends who loved her so.

Visitation will take place on Friday, August 11, 2023, from 10am-1pm at Granger Missionary Church, 50841 Birch Road, Granger, IN, 46530, with the funeral service immediately following.  Her body will be laid to rest in Fairview Cemetery.
