Ellen Emerick

            Ellen L. Emerick, 94, passed away Tuesday, December 18, 2024, peacefully after an extended illness. She was born in Jasper, Indiana on June 11, 1930, to the late Ruby (VanDusen) and Hugo Bloyd Matson.

            On April 3, 1963, she married the love of her life Thomas Emerick. Tom passed away on September 15, 2001, after 38 years of marriage. Ellen was also preceded in death by her sister Eva Faunce; brother, Leroy Matson; sisters-in-law Betty and Beverly Emerick.

            Ellen loved her family and especially loved spending time with the grandkids. Every holiday she and Tom welcomed their family into their home. She had a passion for cooking and was truly an exceptional cook. She was especially fond of baking cookies before Christmas. Her family would gather to make her long list of cookies and fudges. She enjoyed spending an evening crocheting, while Tom watched sports on tv. Ellen and Tom were members of the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #1262 and had been for years. They even had their wedding reception there.

            She loved her many friends at Creekside village. Often going from room to room to visit them all. She was always willing to help the staff. The staff grew so fond of her that they even presented her with an appreciation award, for everything she did for them. On Sunday’s she would enjoy a Caramel Frappes with her daughter Linda, Betty and sister-in-law Dianne.

            When she worked at Gerbers, she operated a power sewing machine making uniforms for the police and firemen. She Passed on her knowledge of sewing to her daughter Linda.

            It is with a heavy heart we must say so long to our beloved Ellen. Left to Cherish her memories are her daughters, Linda (Mike) Nekvasil, Betty (Dale “DJ”) Stratton, Sons Richard (Kathy) Matson and Jim (Linda) Matson. She is also survived by her 10 grandchildren and her 8 great grandchildren.

            The Family wished to make a special thank you to Creekside Village, for taking wonderful care of Ellen for 2 years. “We are indebted to hospice, who has helped us through this most difficult time.”

            A Celebration of Ellen’s life will be held on Sunday January 12, 2025, from 2:00 – 3:00 PM, in Hahn Funeral Home, 505 W 8th street, Mishawaka, With Service beginning at 3 in the Funeral Home. 

            We will always love and miss her. She has earned her wings. Till we meet again, in the kingdom of heaven.
