Gary Dentino Obituary

     Gary R. Dentino, 80, of South Bend passed away, Sunday, May 25th, in his home after an illness.  Gary was born on January 13, 1945, to the late George and Emma Mae (Groh) Dentino.  Gary was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years Karen (Arick) in 2023.  Also preceded in death by Connie Regina (sister).  He is survived by son Brian (Sonya) Dentino; daughter Krista (Rob) Covyeou; grandchildren Alaina, Angelo, and Sophia Dentino.  Gary was a 1963 graduate of Mishawaka High School.  Gary joined the United States Navy upon graduation and was honorably discharged in 1967 after spending time on the USS Intrepid and USS America.

     Gary returned to Mishawaka and joined his father on the Mishawaka Fire Department.  While on the department, he accomplished many notable achievements including being a founding member of the dive/search and rescue group.  Gary also served as an Assistant Chief, Captain and Lieutenant, during his time while serving the city.  Gary retired from the MFD in 2000 after a 32-year career.

     Gary enjoyed hunting, fishing, and generally spending time outdoors, especially up at his beloved cottage in Ludington, MI where he and Karen spent many seasons enjoying the area together.  He was a member of the Council Oak Woodcarvers Club for many years and was a very talented woodcarver.

     Gary (Karen) was also long-time active members of Gospel Center Missionary Church and were both very involved in activities (head of security, basketball and softball teams) there and were known for their friendly and helpful hearts of service to their friends family. 

     The family will receive friends 3pm – 7pm on Sunday, June 1, 2025, at Hahn Funeral Home, 505 W. 8th St Mishawaka, IN.  Funeral Service will begin at 11am Monday, June 2, 2025, at Gospel Center Missionary Church with visitation half hour prior.

     In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Gary’s memory to Gospel Center Missionary Church building fund, 930 S. 30th St, South Bend, IN, 46615 or Mishawaka Fire Department Honor Guard fund.  Checks payable to: MFD Honor Guard, 3000 Harrison Road, Mishawaka, IN 46544
