Gary Lee Detert

Gary Lee Detert, age 78, of Mishawaka passed away Tuesday October 12, 2021, at his home, surrounded by his family. He was born March 17, 1943, in Mishawaka, IN to Melvin Detert and Marie Rast. He married Nancy K. Buck on May 11, 1980. He was proceeded in death by both parents.

Gary graduated from Mishawaka High School class of 1961. He had been a lifelong member of St. Monica Church in Mishawaka, where he also attended grade school. After high school he enlisted into the Marines, where he served 8 years in the reserves. Gary retired from AM General after 25 years and he and Nancy moved to sunny Las Vegas.  He dabbled in several different jobs, from being a business owner, to driving a dialysis bus, to a security guard at the Riviera Casino and then lastly an armored truck driver for Loomis Security. Gary was an avid Notre Dame fan.  There was not a time you wouldn’t see him in a Notre Dame football jersey. He loved the slots, traveling and spending time with his children and grandchildren. He was always supportive and never took sides. We will miss his funny expressions and his big smile.

He is survived by his daughters, Marsha (Scott) Matthews and Kimberly (Tommy) Detert-Osmer; son, Frankie (Robbie) Detert; stepdaughter, Rhonda (Will) Mellen; stepson, Jeff (Danielle) Sellers; grandchildren, Aaron (Courtney) Matthews, Kyle Osmer, Kaden Osmer, Amy (Chris) Lewis, Landon Johns, Sara Sellers and Alycia Villecco; great grandchildren, Kane, Kole, Kinsley Matthews, Makenzie and Bradley Lewis; sister, Sharon Clark; and brothers, Jim (Betty) Vedner, Robert Rast and Bill Detert.

Visitation will be 4 pm-7 pm, Monday, October 18th at Hahn Funeral Home, 505 W. 8th Street, Mishawaka with a rosary at 6:30pm.  Funeral services will be at 10 am, Tuesday, October 19th with Father Kevin Bauman officiating. He will be laid to rest at Fairview Cemetery Mishawaka.
