On June 25, 1988, he married the former Roberta “Bobbi” Sherman VanAvermaete, who preceded him in death on September 20, 2009. Surviving are three children, Jeff VanAvermaete of Mishawaka, Laurie (George) Lacey of Port Huron, MI and Rhonda Grinnell of Searcy, AR; grandchildren, David Singleton, Cody and Charles Starks; a sister Sharon (Ransom) Ebersole of Rolling Prairie, IN and a brother, Warren Tipton of New Carlisle, as well as many nieces and nephews.

The most important things in Hugh’s life were his wife and family. His love for and devotion to Bobbi had no limits. Around the house and with the kids they called each other “Higgins” and “Miss Bobbi.” The kids knew he loved them too. He took the time to tell them, and he always remembered birthdays. He liked to write birthday letters.
Growing up with his siblings, Hugh was a typical Big Brother. He appointed himself guardian and was fiercely protective. Later on, he became the brother who was there if needed, would help if he could and was never more than a phone call away.
