James Meersman Obituary

James Meersman, 88, peacefully passed away at his home on Saturday, January 13, 2024. He was the last of the generation.

James was born on June 15th, 1935, in Mishawaka to Gentiel and Margaret (DeSmet). They both preceded him in death.

On November 6th, 1982, he married Margaret Boden; she preceded him in death on April 15th, 2012.

Left to cherish the memory of James are his children, Mary (Ron) Nelson of MN, Mike (Jean) Meersman of AZ, Jerry (Lisa) Meersman of FL, Sherry Meersman of SD, and James (Brandi) Meersman Jr of MI; 11 grandchildren, Ashley and Christopher Nelson, Danny and Jason Meersman, Nathan and Marina Meersman, Shelby Meersman, Nathan and Arthur "AJ" Prim, Matthew Meersman and Sarah Hickle, along with 14 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brothers, sisters, and his son, Patrick Meersman, and daughter, Jane Ann Meersman.

James started his career at Playland Park in 1944-1968, which included maintaining the baseball diamond for the South Bend Blue Sox. In the early 1960's the park was replaced with the first night-lighted par 3 golf course, which he was instrumental in building and maintaining. He then went on to be head superintendent for the South Bend Country Club, which was ranked 5th in the state. James went on to be co-owner of Shady Hills Golf Course in Marion, IN.

James then ended as owner and operator of a lawn care service. If you have ever met James or stopped him long enough to start a conversation, you know we've lost a generation of history. He will be missed by many.
