James M. Carnes, known to his friends and family as Jim, passed away on January 24, 2026, at the age of 75. He was born on September 26, 1950, to Clyde and Waneta (Newcomer) Carnes in Mishawaka.
A proud and diligent foundry worker, Jim dedicated many years to Dodge Manufacturing, where he was not only respected for his work ethic but also appreciated for his camaraderie and sense of community.
In his personal life, Jim was an ardent supporter of Indiana University sports, carrying a flame of enthusiasm for each game and a hope for victory that never waned. His voice was often among the chorus of cheers that rose with each play, a testament to his loyal and spirited nature. It was one of his greatest joys that he was able to watch IU win the national championship this month.
Jim's devotion to leisure activities was equally passionate. He was a familiar face at the local bowling alleys, where his competitive spirit and friendly banter made him a beloved member of the bowling community. Furthermore, Jim's love for fishing took him to the serene lakes of Michigan and Wisconsin, where he found solace and joy in the quietude of nature and the thrill of the catch.
Above all, Jim was a dedicated family man. He is survived by his loving daughters, Lori (Ryan) Stough and Erin (Robb Cole) Everett; along with his cherished grandchildren, Aliya, Liam, and Sophie, who brought immense joy and pride to his life. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Tom Carnes.
A celebration of life will be held in Jim’s honor at a later date. Hahn Funeral Home has been entrusted with the final arrangements and extends their deepest sympathies to the Carnes family.
