James "Sol" Solomon Obituary

Mishawaka – James David “Sol” Solomon, 84, passed away on Sunday, June 13, at St. Joseph Regional Hospital.  James was born in North Vandergrift, PA, to parents James Asaad and Rose (Castel) Solomon. He was preceded in death by his wife Marilyn, sisters Dee Galli and Patricia Winters, and brother Grover “Sam” Solomon.  On April 4, 1964, Sol married Marilyn Mannion in El Dorado, KS. He is survived by his sons, John Solomon of Allen, TX, Jeffrey “Fred” (Amy) Solomon of Indianapolis, Patrick (Michelle) Solomon of Bremen, and Mark (Kathleen) Solomon of South Bend; and 10 grandchildren.

Sol attended the University of Kentucky for two years where he played football and sang in the glee club.  He moved to Wichita, KS, where he served in the Air Force Reserve and met his wife, Marilyn.  Together, they settled in Seattle, WA, where he was employed by Boeing Aircraft Corporation as a radar technician. In 1971, he moved his family to Indiana and worked at South Bend Hardware in the Town and Country Shopping Center in Mishawaka. Eventually, he purchased his own store, becoming the owner and sole proprietor of Sol’s Hardware in South Bend.  It was there on the West side where Sol thoroughly enjoyed serving each and every customer who entered his store with kindness and joy, endearing himself to the community and all who knew him.

In retirement, he loved spending time with his grandchildren and making the rounds and visiting with friends he’d made at Martin’s Supermarket in Granger, Kroger Supermarket in Mishawaka, the downtown Mishawaka Post Office, and the hospital. Sol enjoyed playing cards, cribbage, backgammon, and Morra. He cheered for any and all Pittsburgh sports teams, and he was a lifetime member and 3rd Degree Knight with the Mishawaka Knights of Columbus, 1878 Council.  Also an avid golfer and liar’s poker player, Sol enjoyed spending time with his many friends. He had a great relationship with Jesus and he was not afraid to spread the good news. He knew no strangers.
