Marc Vander McCray passed away peacefully in his home on December 7, 2024. Marc was born on May 20, 1950, to Vander E. McCray Sr. and Marlene DeFreeuw (Wafer) in South Bend, Indiana. He was preceded in death and is now reunited in eternity with his father and brother Vander McCray Jr. who passed in early 2023.
Marc is survived by Ms. Sue Witucki of Mishawaka, his wife-partner of 32 years and constant caregiver and support system throughout his cancer battle. He is also survived by younger brother Michael (Leoni) McCray, sister Martha McCall and his mother Marlene; two children Adam McCray and Angie (Robert) Farkas, stepson Rick Van Vynckt, and stepdaughter Kelly Dallie; grandchildren Stevie Nelson Jr., Natalie Nelson, Aja McCray, Isiah McCray, Justin Ocegueda and Jordan Dallie.
Marc worked at Avanti for more than a decade and in the Mishawaka Street Department for 22 years, most of which were spent as the Union Steward for Teamsters LU 364. Upon retirement from the city in 2007, he took a job at Hoosier Harley-Davidson so that he could be closer to the machines he loved. From there he worked as a driver/Chief Entertainment Officer for Ziker Cleaners and as a bartender at the Galley in Mishawaka cracking jokes and making friends every day.
The original Easy Rider, the space between 1950 and 2024 held so many great stories of adventure and hijinks with friends and family alike. If you knew him, you loved him. And if he loved you, you knew it.
The family will receive friends at Hahn Funeral Home, 505 W. 8th Street, Mishawaka, Indiana on Thursday, December 19th from 4pm to 6pm. A memorial service will begin at 6pm.
In lieu of flowers the family would like for donations to be made to Center For Hospice .
