Mary Katherine Waterson, 84, of Mishawaka, passed away on October 1, 2021. Mary was born on August 19, 1937, in Mishawaka to the late Frank and Dorothy (Hums) Zimmerman. Mary loved books growing up and worked in the library as a student at St. Joseph High School. She went on to graduate from Indiana University and Catholic University in Washington D.C. with her Library science degree. Mary then worked for the St. Joseph County Public Library for 36 years as the director of local history and genealogy department. In an interview with the South Bend Tribune, she was quoted saying, “I have lived a full life, and loved every part of being a librarian. I was able to help the community and enjoy my work at the same time.” Mary was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in South Bend since 1966 where she hosted the coffee hour after mass. After she retired from the library Mary also worked on the history of St. Joseph Catholic Church. Her daughter, Margaret, plays the organ at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church for 26 years and Mary was very proud of her and loved to hear her play.
Mary is survived by her loving husband of 55 years, Willard Waterson; her daughter, Margaret George (Greg Rolston); and numerous extended family members and friends.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:30 am, Friday, October 8, 2021, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 226 N Hill St, South Bend, IN 46617. Friends may visit with the family one hour prior to mass in the church. Mary will be laid to rest in Fairview Cemetery in Mishawaka.
