We regretfully announce the passing of our mother Mary Worthman of Saratoga Springs, NY, on April 11, 2024. Mary was surrounded by her family and passed away peacefully. Our mother Mary was one of the strongest, most generous women we knew, and our family is blessed to have had her in our lives. We will never be able to fill the space she leaves behind.
Mary was born and raised in Stillwater, MN, to Gerhard and Myrtle Lehrer on March 22, 1934. Mary attended Iowa State Teachers College (now University of Northern Iowa), graduating with a bachelor’s degree in education, Mary returned to Minnesota where she taught history at Albert Lea High School. Mary then went on to earn a master’s degree in political science from the University of Wisconsin. Mary went on to have a long career teaching high school history, and retired from St. Joseph High School in South Bend, IN, in 1994.
In June 1963, Mary married David Worthman and together they had three children and spent 37 wonderful years together. In their retirement, Mary and David enjoyed traveling the world and spending time with family and friends.
Mary was predeceased by her parents; her son, Timothy; her husband; and her sister, Patricia Gatzke. She is survived by her two daughters, Heidi Worthman (Jim Bielefeld) and Katie Worthman (Peter Lundberg). Also surviving are Mary’s four granddaughters, who knew her as Gommy: Amelia Katherine Bielefeld, Madeline Grace Bielefeld, Caroline Elizabeth Bielefeld, and Maeve Aster Worthman Lundberg. Gommy adored her granddaughters and was totally devoted to them as they were to her.
The family would like to thank Dr. John Pezzulo, Mitch Forshey, PA and staff, and the staff at Woodlawn Commons.
Memorial contributions may be made to the South Bend Center for the Homeless, https://www.cfh.net or the Prostate Cancer Foundation http://www.pcf.org.
