Michael "Mike" Arney Obituary

Michael “Mike” Allen Arney, 70, of South Bend, IN left on one final adventure to be with his beloved daughter, Becky on Saturday, October 14, 2023.

Mike was born on October 3, 1953, at Lee Memorial Hospital in Dowagiac, MI but he always joked he was almost born in an outhouse.  He grew up in Detroit, MI, the only child of Lyle and Dorothy (Zinn) Arney, graduating from Persing High School in 1971. Upon graduation, Mike joined the United States Air Force and married his high school sweetheart, Marilyn Michael.  Happily married for 52 years, they had 2 daughters, Deborah and Rebecca Arney.

During his 9 years in the USAF, Mike and his family traveled much of the United States.  He also completed solo tours of duty in Greece and Spain.  Upon leaving the military, the Arney’s settled in South Bend where Mike pursued a career in IT.  He retired as a team leader with IBM in 2019.

Mike’s hobbies included golfing, fishing, camping and pursuing yard sales. He was passionate about the fine arts, attending many Renaissance fairs, drum corps competitions, local theater performances and volunteering as much as possible with both daughters’ extracurricular band and drama activities.  He loved being a member of the Lions Club, doing impersonations on morning radio talk shows and committing any other shenanigans that he thought he could get away with.

Many people say there was no such thing as a stranger to Mike, just a friend he had not met yet.  He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

Mike leaves behind his wife, Marilyn; daughter, Deborah; mother, Dorothy; 2 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren and a bevy of aunts, cousins, in-laws and outlaws.

Mike was preceded in death by his father, Lyle and daughter, Becky.
