Phyllis Ann Banes passed away peacefully on October 8, 2024. She was born September 24,1939, to Francis and Bessie Hassett in Danville, Illinois.
Phyllis graduated from Lafayette Jefferson High School in1957 and received her certification as a registered nurse from St. Elizabeth School of nursing, Lafayette, Indiana.
She was married 60 years to her high school sweetheart, Arlan Lynn Banes. They wed on September 24, 1960. They were blessed with three children: Laurie (Robert) Goerke, John (Shelly) Banes, and Leanne (Sean) Kelly.
She was a proud Matriarch and loved her family fiercely, especially her grandchildren, Kelli (Nic) Beery, Heather (Scott) Doering, Clark Goerke, Danielle (Josh) Banes-Foster, Jena Banes, Kyle (Hilary) Clodfelter, Brook Clodfelter, Kaelin Kelly, Katherine Kelly, Conor Kelly, 12 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Phyllis is also survived by her siblings who will miss her dearly: Theodore Hassett, Mary (Preston)Thornbrough, and William (Melinda) Hassett.
She was preceded in death by her parents Francis and Bessie Hassett , her husband Arlan Banes, and her grandson, Clark Goerke.
Phyllis worked as a nurse for 30 years caring for the priests and brothers of the Holy Cross at Notre Dame University.
Phyllis enjoyed baking and sharing her treats with all she loved. One of her favorite traditions was decorating Christmas cookies with her grandkids. Other passions were love of her Catholic faith, gardening, crafting, and sewing.
Visitation will take place on Sunday, October 13, 2024, from 3:00 PM-6:00 PM at Hahn Funeral Home, 505 W 8th Street, Mishawaka. A rosary will begin at 5:30 PM in the funeral home. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Monday October 14, 2024, at 10:00 AM, in St. Matthew Cathedral, 1701 Miami St, South Bend.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Phyllis’ name.
