Rita S. Bauwens, a lifelong resident of South Bend, IN, passed away peacefully on January 15, 2026, at the age of 98. Born on June 3, 1927, to Joseph and Catherine (Zakrzewski) Winkiewicz, Rita was a beacon of spunk and spirit in the community she so dearly loved.
Rita's early life was marked by her dedication to hard work and quality time with family and friends. After graduating from high school, she furthered her studies at Thomas Commercial College. She had a successful career at Allied-Signal. She worked with the company throughout the company's transitions to Bendix, then Honeywell, and she retired in 1987 after over 35 years of service. Rita loved the University of Notre Dame. She passionately followed the football team and women’s basketball. Her love for the Fighting Irish was infectious.
On January 12, 1952, Rita married the love of her life, Roy Bauwens, in a beautiful ceremony in South Bend. Their union was blessed with a son, Dr. J. Eric Bauwens. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy; her son, Dr. J. Eric Bauwens; her parents, and her siblings, Joann Wantuch, Al Williams, Gladys Kuhar, Clem Winkiewicz, Helen Spomberg, Ann Marut, Alice Imbrogno, and Joe Winkiewicz. Rita's legacy continues through her grandchildren, Caroline and Eleonor Bauwens, and the many nieces and nephews who will remember her fondly.
