Born to Richard and Serena (DeGroote) Currey in Mishawaka, Indiana on November 13, 1923, Robert S. Currey died peacefully in his home in Granger, Indiana on December 8, 2025. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife of 68 years Virginia (Hawley) Currey, who passed away on December 6, 2016. He is survived by his second wife Genevieve (Turza/Kiefer) Currey, his children Richard (Chris) Currey of Mishawaka, Indiana and Carolyn (Carl) Howe of Stow, Massachusetts, his grandchildren Laura Cheri, Blair (Meiling) Currey, Robert Howe and David Howe, and great-grandchildren Lilly Cheri, Luca Cheri, Abraham Currey, and another “on the way” to Blair and Meiling.
After graduating from Mishawaka High School, Bob attended Indiana University where he joined the ROTC and Delta Upsilon fraternity and studied business prior to being called to service with the United States Army midway through his Junior year. Upon graduating from Officers Candidate School just as the war in the Pacific was ending, he was deployed to Japan and arrived in Tokyo Harbor on the first troop ship to arrive after the lifting of blackout requirements. Upon being mustered out in 1947, Bob returned to IU to complete his bachelor’s degree followed by law school.
During his 58-year legal career, Bob served his clients with the utmost devotion and integrity, including roles as Osceola Town Attorney, Assistant Prosecuting Attorney, and decades as legal counsel to Mishawaka Federal Savings and the Mishawaka-Penn-Harris Public Library.
An excellent cook, Bob perfected numerous recipes which remain family favorites. A talented writer and voracious reader until the end, his most recent study just months before his death was a deep dive into Plato’s “Republic”. However, Bob’s deepest passion was travel, both domestic and international, which he planned meticulously with daily written itineraries drawing attention to the smallest details such as where to find a particularly interesting tombstone in the back corner of a small Norman church in the Cotswolds.
But, most importantly, Bob was a devoted friend and loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, who will be sorely missed by all who had the good fortune to know him.
Visitation with Bob’s family will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Friday February 6, 2026, at Hahn Funeral Home 505 W 8th Street in Mishawaka, followed by a memorial service at Noon.
In lieu of flowers and in recognition of Bob’s lifelong love of learning, his family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Mishawaka-Penn-Harris Public Library, 209 Lincoln Way East, Mishawaka, Indiana 46544.
