Roy Kohler was born on March 13, 1946, in Mishawaka, Indiana, to Harry Marvin Kohler and Mary Ellen Kohler, both of whom preceded him in death, along with his sister, Janice Nidiffer. He is survived by his sons, Quinn L. Kohler and his wife, Jayne, of Elkhart, Indiana, and Casey L. Kohler of South Bend, Indiana; his grandchildren, Courtney L. Kohler of Elkhart, Indiana, and Austin D. Kohler of Salcha, Alaska; and his brother, Charles D. Kohler and his wife, Laura, of Niles, Michigan.
Roy Kohler was a graduate of Mishawaka High School, where he remained an active and proud member of the alumni association, regularly attending the monthly alumni luncheons. Following high school, he pursued further training at the Acme School of Tool and Die and went on to work at Dodge Manufacturing as a skilled machinist until his department closed in the early 1980s. At this point, Roy bought a franchise of P&D Auto Parts.
During his younger days, Roy enjoyed a drink or two at various bars; his gregarious personality drew people to him, and he seldom knew a stranger. Roy was also a great cook; he loved to make corned beef and cabbage and would invite his family over on New Year's Day for pork roast and sauerkraut.
One of his other superpowers was the uncanny ability to tell you how to get anywhere between Mishawaka and Florida and New York if you gave him a street and city.
Roy knew the route to Florida well. In the early 1950s, his family built a home on Anna Maria Island, which became a place Roy returned to very often throughout his life. The island became a source of cherished memories, a quiet refuge, and a place that always held a special and everlasting place in his heart.
Friends and family will remember Roy for his ability to fix just about anything, his gift for woodworking, and the stories he generosity shared with those around him.
Visitation will be held on Friday December 26, from 11:00 AM -1:00 PM in Hahn Funeral Home 505 w 8th street Mishawaka. Funeral Services will begin at 1:00 PM in the funeral Home with burial to follow in Fairview Cemetery Mishawaka.
