Susan Schall, 69, passed away peacefully from complications of COVID-19 on Monday, October 18, 2021.
Susan Kay Shackelford was born in 1952 in South Bend, IN, to Riley and Mary Shackelford. A part of Niles High School Class of 1971, Susan lived most of her life in Niles, MI, with a few years spent in Plymouth, IN, and Grand Rapids, MI. She was a diligent worker at each job she had, whether that was as a nurse aid, a caretaker for the elderly, a regional manager in advertising, or an insurance claims representative. She married John Schall in 1981 and they recently celebrated 40 years together. There were plenty of ups and downs like any marriage, but she and John loved each other very much and enjoyed their sweet retirement years, side by side. The joy of their lives together was their daughter, Laura, with whom they both shared a close relationship. Their joy expanded when Laura married Josh (their "son-in-love") and then overflowed with the births of their three grandsons, Riley, Caleb, and Henry. Susan absolutely adored being a grandmother and her grandsons definitely had her wrapped around their little fingers!
Also surviving her are her sisters, Kathy (Jerry) Musser and Teresa (Dan) Perry; brothers, Rick Shackelford and Roy (Vicky) Shackelford; and her sister-in-law, Barbara Dull. She was preceded in death by both of her parents, Riley and Mary Shackelford; two of her brothers, David Shackelford and Richard Shackelford; and her best friend, Bonnie Nifong.
In her spare time, Susan enjoyed cooking, gardening, reading, and playing with her beloved grandchildren. She also loved her frequent “Yayas” club lunches with her sisters and sister-in-law. Blessed greatly with the gift of hospitality, Susan was the consummate hostess to her and John’s regular small group Bible Study, always taking such care to ensure everyone’s comfort.
Susan regularly attended and was a member of Summit Church in Niles for almost 30 years. She loved to sing worship music and was so grateful Jesus loved her enough to die for her sins! She frequently contributed both her time and money to churches and ministries that spread the loving forgiveness of her dear Savior. As 2 Timothy 4:7 says, she fought the good fight, finished the race, and kept the faith!
A memorial service will be held at 11AM on Wednesday, November 3rd, 2021, at Summit Church in Niles, Michigan. Susan loved beautiful flowers and especially the color pink. To honor her, the family would be comforted by cheerful colors and attire for the celebration of her life. A meal will be served for family members immediately after the service.
